Eggers’ killifish — blue phenotype
The blue phenotype has a pale patterned tail; red forms remain the same species.
The blue male has a pale-blue flank, irregular rear bars and pale median fins with red-brown marks and whitish edges. Red phenotypes have red tails and reticulation.
- Adult length
- Up to 3.9 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
- Water temperature
- 24–28 °C
- Lifespan
- 0.5–1.3 years
- Natural habitat
- Inhabits temporary pools and swamps.
Wild water is 29.5–31.5°C, but do not keep it at constant high heat. Warmer racks suit it.
Appearance and identification
From seasonal coastal Tanzanian waters. Blue and red phenotypes are one species; locality lines differ, and colour alone cannot identify them.
Same-species behaviour
Keep colour forms and locality lines separate and avoid crosses.
Space requirements
Keep feeding visible and allow separation.
Diet and feeding
Match small animal foods to size. Fry take Artemia.
Compatibility limits
Check feeding, pursuit and size differences. A shared genus does not guarantee compatibility.
Aquarium environment
Removable spawning media make egg management easier.
