Yucatan molly
The mature male's tall spotted dorsal stands out; juveniles can resemble other sailfin mollies.
- Adult length
- Up to 15 cm (standard length, without the tail fin)
- Water temperature
- 22–28 °C
- Lifespan
- Up to 5 years
- pH
- 7–8.5
- Hardness
- 15–35 dGH
- Natural habitat
- Native to waters of Yucatán–Quintana Roo and the lower Usumacinta–Laguna de Términos systems in Mexico.
Provide substantial stable space and check ancestry and original salinity.
Appearance and identification
Compare dorsal outline and fin markings with a mature male P. latipinna; both can show a sail-like dorsal. Juveniles, folded fins and trade hybrids are easily confused.
Same-species behaviour
Males pursue vigorously; keep two females with one male. Provide refuge, open swimming space and separation options.
Space requirements
A 91 × 38 cm base. Plan around adults, swimming room and offspring.
Diet and feeding
Provide a varied diet with plant material.
Compatibility limits
Keep with companions suited to hard water. Hybridizes with other mollies; separate stocks where preservation matters. Parents and other fish may eat fry. Check prior water rather than prescribing salt to every stock.
Aquarium environment
Dense planting, some floating cover and open swimming areas. Plants do not guarantee fry survival. Match plants to actual hardness and salinity and avoid crowding that restricts male dorsal display.
